What do students and faculty think of rubrics? Faculty developers at the Academy of Art University surveyed students and instructors about rubric effectiveness in 2008 and 2014. Results provide encouragement, caveats, and food for thought to institutions looking to bolster assessment with rubrics.
Two instructors who led the successful standardization of rubrics across all sections of a freshman-writing course present their triumphs, caveats, and outstanding questions. Their approach, which ensured that the rubrics evolved from what instructors were already doing in their own courses, is easily transferable to other contexts.
